I slowly trail off as I notice Nea has stopped listening to me. How dare he!? A princess’s constituents should always pay attention to their princess. Even if she is saying something that is of no interest to them.

“Nea—” I start to reprimand him, but his fingers come up to touch my lips, silencing me and effectively filling me with outrage.

A frown covers my mouth as my eyebrows scrunch together and I prepare to give him the princessly telling off of his life. How dare he not only silence me but put his dirty commoner fingers on my lips?! The nerve! How am I supposed to eat my ice cream with his fingers on my lips?

If they knew I was a princess, the patrons of this establishment would gasp in horror at his nerve. To dishonor their princess in such a way is unthinkable.

I look around the room, expecting to note nothing out of the ordinary on the faces of the patrons, when I see something strange. Very strange. All the patrons have frozen, most in mid-bite. I also notice the silence in the room; no one is speaking anymore. Even the sound of the cashier taking orders has stopped. Everyone is completely unmoving.

“Something is happening, Princess,” Nea says very quietly.

I look to Webber and see that he is frozen, but not in the same way. He looks on alert, his hand clenched into a fist as his eyes dart around the room.

“We should evacuate the premises,” Webber tells us slowly. “It is no longer safe here, Princess.”

“He is correct. No one stops eating ice cream. It’s delicious; what would be the point of stopping?” Nea goes on, and I look to my bunny shifter to see him nodding in agreement, his lips tight.

I lift my hand, removing Nea’s fingers from my mouth and giving him a pointed glare.

“Let us go then,” I announce, slowly rising from my chair and wincing as the wooden legs scrape against the tiled floor.

At once, all the patrons in the ice cream parlor stand in synchrony, all of their faces turning toward us as one. My men—my companions—my constituents, also stand and surround me, preparing to defend their princess against the townsfolk. The still unmoving townsfolk.

“This is truly strange, is it not, Princess? I have been here to get ice cream many times and not once has this happened. Well, it could have happened and maybe I just didn’t notice. Their ice cream is so delicious that sometimes when I get started I just block out the rest of the world. This could be very common,” Nea explains, pausing to look around the room. “ARE YOU ALL ENJOYING YOUR ICE CREAM?” he yells loudly, enunciating it all very slowly.

“What the hell are you doing?” Jace growls, glaring at Nea then back to the room full of unmoving people.

Nea grins, waving his arms around the room. “Rousing them! Maybe they are about to put on a skit! I do love a good skit.”

“They are not about to put on a skit!” Webber spits out, pushing me flat against his back.
